How type 2 diabetes can be managed and reversed through lifestyle medicine.

This week is national diabetes week, and we’re thrilled to see people coming together to discuss diabetes and raise awareness of how it can be recognised. In this article I’d like to address one of the most common misunderstandings surrounding diabetes that I’ve come across in my career as a medical practitioner in proactive health management.

The problem with the current treatment of type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is generally identified and treated far too late. By the time patients are noticing symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, blurred vision, and fatigue, they are already diabetic, as their high insulin levels have progressed to high blood sugar levels. If these increased insulin levels had been identified earlier however, steps could have been taken to manage and even reverse them naturally.

In order to pick up diabetes before the blood sugar is raised insulin levels should be checked earlier, so that we can tackle the root of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms later down the line.

To put this into perspective, I’d compare it to treating a leg infection. In a leg infection, bacteria would be found and an antibiotic would be taken to address the issue. So, although you may also be suffering from a fever, simply taking an ibuprofen to reduce it would not deal with the underlying cause of the problem.

Here are the ways you can alter your lifestyle

Whether you are pre-diabetic or diabetic, it’s imperative that the root cause of the problem is treated. Therefore, as diabetes is an issue of insulin resistance, cutting out sugar and refined carbohydrates completely will make your insulin levels more controlled.

The other step that’s crucial in treating type 2 diabetes is fasting for 18 hours 3 times a week, and for 24 hours once every 2 weeks. As sugar causes inflammation in the body, fasting will greatly reduce that inflammation by pushing your body to consume more sugar, which will reduce blood sugar significantly and decrease insulin resistance.

Over time, diabetes can cause eye problems, kidney problems, nerve damage and many more health problems. We therefore promote and encourage treating the underlying cause, rather than just taking medication later down the line as damage control. We firmly believe lifestyle medicine is the key to managing and reversing type 2 diabetes, as well as many other illnesses, which is why we provide our own lifestyle medicine service to help you identify the sort of interventions that are precisely right for your needs.
